Laura Montedoro

Full Professor
ICAR/21 – Urban Design

Deputy Head of the Master Program

Laura Montedoro (Bari, 1967), architect and art historian, is full professor of Urban Planning in the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of the Milan Polytechnic, where she has been teaching Urban Planning since 1998. Urban design and the design of open spaces are at the center of his research activities.

In particular, you have focused on design exploration as a cognitive tool of the potential of contexts, with a cross-scale approach, often in dialogue with local administrations, also through consultancy and applied research activities. Particular attention is paid to the dimension of implementation planning, as an indispensable tool for controlling the quality of the spatial outcomes of urban planning action in the complex processes of large urban transformations, such as for disused railway yards and military areas, as well as widespread regeneration.

Interested in the role of urban design in rapidly growing cities, and in particular in the reference development models of African cities, since 2011 she has been cultivating research on urbanization in the countries of the Global South. On these topics you have coordinated transdisciplinary and international research projects, financed through competitive tenders. Several occasions for investigations in Sub-Saharan Africa in the context of Third Mission activities; among these, we mention: the three Polisocial Award Projects – 2016; ‘Mo.N.G.U.E.’, 2018; ‘Boa_Ma_Nhã, Maputo!’, 2020; ‘HANDS_ Health AND urban Space in Chamanculo, Mozambique’.

She is the promoter and referent of the Framework Agreements of the Politecnico di Milano with the M_EIA of Cabo Verde and with the ENAM of Marrakech.
